Illegal Workers Rounded Up In Na Jomtien

The Department of Special Investigation  or DSI as it is well known led a raid on a hotel in Na Jomtien after reports that a number of foreign illegal workers were staying there.

A raid to check on the status of illegal workers would normally be carried out by the Immigration department. It is curious that this raid is just one in a series that has been led by the DSI - The Thai equivalent of the FBI rather than the designated immigration department.

Chaos ensued as the DSI agents surrounded and moved in on the The Holiday Hotel Jomtien Na Jomtien with people scattering in all directions to avoid the long arm of the law. Over 50 people were rounded up with nationalities ranging from Burma, Laos and Cambodia.

One 23 year old Burmese lady in desperation jumped fron the second floor and broke her left leg. She had to be transported to Banglamung Hospital for emergency treatment.

The 50 suspected illegal workers were taken to be processed it seems that they all had passports but officials want to check if they are here to work and if so they have relevant work permits. Anyone not having the proper documentation could well face deportation back to their home. countries.
