Police Volunteer Shoots and Pick-up Crashes Killing 2 Cambodian Workers

Police region 2 Commander - Pol.Maj.Gen.Sanit held a press conference to give further details of the shooting incident that led to a young girl being wounded and also led to the death of two Cambodian migrant workers who died when their pick-up truck overturned.

Police have now identified the two men who did the shooting as a Khun Sombat Darnin an ex-volunteer police officer and Khun Wanlop. The pair had seen a pick-up crash through a police checkpoint colliding with a police vehicle. The officers at the scene were not able to respond and they decided to give chase. Khun Sombat opened fire with his 9mm weapon trying to shoot out the vehicles tyres. He was unaware that a stray bullet had wounded a nearby 11 year girl who was shot in the elbow.

They gave up the chase as the pick-up left their area. The pick-up lost control and overturned a little while later killing two of it's 11 occupants. Statements from the survivors of the pick-up crash showed that they were fleeing the check point as they had heard that the police were cracking down on foreign workers and they were heading for the border.

The police volunteer has been charged with a range of firearms offences including possession of an illegal weapon and discharge of a weapon in a public place.
