Pattaya Ferry Disaster Safety Meeting

Another high level meeting was held at Pattaya City Hall in the wake of the Ferry disaster which claimed 7 lives and injured scores of Thai and foreign tourists.

The meeting to discuss security measures on the ferry service was attended by Khun Amphol from the Consumer Protection Board, Khun Rankert Ekasing the deputy mayor of Pattaya, and senior officials from the marine department and DSI (Department of Special Investigation)

Under discussion were safety measures and safety equipment on the ferries which proved woefully inadequate in the recent disaster. Stricter enforcement is needed to ensure that new regulations are adhered to with regular inspections and random spot checks to check on compliance. If passengers see anything untoward they are urged to call the Consumer Protection Hotline at 1166 to inform the authorities of any safety infractions they find.
